At its outset, 2024 was hailed as a pivotal year for democracy, with national elections scheduled or expected among almost half of the world’s population, in more than 60 countries and the European Union.
"A victory by former president Donald Trump raises the prospect that the next administration may use government powers to go after political opponents, politicize the civil service, pardon insurrectionists, and weaken support for democratic partners abroad, particularly Ukraine."
True statement, except substitute Biden for Trump and Israel for Ukraine.
I would love for the author to define "democracy" as they see it. When someone says, defend democracy? Okay. Define democracy. What are "democratic" institutions in this context? Are we talking about democratic Republic? As in, democratic being an adjective to describe the republic? These words get thrown around too much, and not everyone defines them the same way.
I continue to be amazed at how out of touch and unhinged from reality liberals appear to be. The author sounds like an intelligent person. How can he on the one hand foreshadow a dystopian nightmare of a 2nd Trump term where Trump uses 'government powers to go after political opponents, politicize the civil service, pardon insurrectionists, and weaken support for democratic partners abroad...' when A) Trump already served for 4 years and none of this happened and, more importantly, B) Biden is doing ALL OF THIS RIGHT NOW!!! I don't know if it is gaslighting, cognitive dissonance, Trump derangement, or some combination of the three, but it is impressive in its brazenness. What planet are you living on?
This is well below the Liberal Patriot’s usual succinct and clear-headed analysis, with a minimum of propaganda and the usual canards about people of “the Right” being authoritarians. I spend a lot of time in Portugal and am currently in Italy. The conservative parties in both countries are far more dedicated to individual liberty and democratic government than the Left. There is nothing “authoritarian” (read: Nazi) about Chega or any of the right-leaning political parties and movements, whether in Argentina or elsewhere. This piece is full of the usual horseshit we can get from MSNBC and other propaganda outlets. Do better.
