One word describes why you see Republicans and Independents liking Fetterman… RESPECT. They respect him as a person and can acknowledge his thinking is rational even if they don’t always agree with it. I am very hard pressed to find any other Democrat that is in the national news I can say that about. It used to be this was common among one’s political opponents. It is now rare
A recent opinion survey showed the current party breakdown of voters: 45% Independent, 27% Republican 27% Democrat. Let's go with these numbers for this analysis.
If Fetterman were physically healthy enough to run for President - he never will be after his stroke - he would be a very strong candidate because of his appeal to Independents and Trump-skeptic Republicans. If he somehow got the 2028 Democratic nomination he would win the general election in a landslide, receiving at least 60% of Independents, meaning 27% of the popular vote right there. Give him 25% more from Democrats who would agree to be tortured before voting for any Republican; he's up to 52% of the popular vote. Assuming Vance is the GOP nominee, give Fetterman 3% from the 27% Republican vote - probably much more. That's 55% of the popular vote, a landslide in today's environment. Fetterman would win all the states that Harris did in 2024, plus PA, WI, MI for sure and very likely NC, GA, AZ, and NV giving him a comfortable win in the electoral college.
This is all idle speculation: the Wokester Left will determine who the Democratic nominee is in 2028.
In his book on early 80s neoliberal Democrats, Randall Rothenberg pointed out that the voting records of neoliberals in Congress were barely any different from those of more straightforwardly liberal Dems, yet a lot of people in their own party were suspicious of them. It's all too common for differences in style and emphasis to lead to huge condemnations from a person's own side.
Already by that time many liberal Dems were neo liberal economically, Krugman on trade for instance. Wealth and the professional managerial class can afford liberalism as a hobby, and neoliberalism for their bank accounts.
Fetterman would have the best chance of beating Vance, but he'd never make it past the primaries.
I don't see how we are ever going to win back a sizeable majority if we continue to move ever further to the fringes. I wonder how the voting records of the Republicans compare to the Democrats, like how far away from party orthodoxy they can vote and still get re elected.
It is more than a little ironic, even now, as Dems feverishly work to sell American voters the very Progressive nepo baby Andy Beshears as a Fetterman, Dems fail recognize, the actual Fetterman is probably their best 2028 hope of a Dem WH reclamation, not a cheap, phony KY replica.
Fetterman and Shapiro, Penn's modern day Mutt and Jeff, should be at the top of any Dem 2028 WH prospect lists. Unfortunately, neither probably has a prayer of surviving a Dem primary.
It took Dems about all of 10 minutes to decide Israel led Trump into Iran, like a dumb lamb to slaughter. Dem antisemitism never departs, it just takes different forms depending on the day, like Jello in a 80's school cafeteria.
Unless Shapiro undergoes a midlife conversion, ironically and ideally to Islam, considering the current Dem climate, his slim Presidential chances probably perished in Tehran, along with Khomeini.
For Dems, Fetterman committed the unpardonable sin of refusing to reflexively loathe Trump 24/7, while perpetually conveying his hatred, around the clock, on cable TV. Worse yet, the heretical Fetterman sometimes publicly supports the President.
Finally, neither Josh or John has made the latest Dem obligatory holy pilgrimage, to the new Iowa. Neither Penn Bro has yet found the time, to fly private for cocktails with a deported gang banging, people trafficking, Maryland father.
"...he also clearly believes he should work to represent all Pennsylvanians, not just those in his party."
Huh. A man who can think for himself. Whoda thunk it?
The so-called Democratic Party operates like it's still being run by Boss Tweed, but to be sure, the Republicans are no better on that count. People who use terms like RINO and DINO should be beaten with a stout stick.
Democrats accuse Republicans of being in a cult. I wonder what Fetterman, Sinema, and Manchin think about that?

The Democrats want a "moderate", not a moderate.
Solid comment.

The modern American polity seems to consist of a left wing, a right wing, and no bird in between. No wonder we can't fly anywhere.
