I would especially encourage you, if you have doubts, to read about the video-captured behavior of Trump’s blackshirt brigades in the actual evidence submitted in the legal cases being brought against them, and the way it directly contradicts the accounts of the agents deposed in these cases (in which the violence perpetrated by these ICE agents was said to have been provoked by aggressive actions from their victims): https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/49/34/daecfb4d4b86971a884bd736a564/ellisopinion.pdf
The blackshirts are the ones wearing masks - AKA violent leftists with assassination complexes. They've been defying Federal law in a way that we haven't seen since the civil rights movement of the 1950s. They're been ambushing ICE agents. They've been storming federal buildings. And they've decided they get to pick and choose which laws are unconstitutional and decide for themselves which ones to follow.
Rulings by leftist judges have extremely high rates of getting overturned, even at the appellate level, including notable rulings by leftist judges prohibiting ICE raids. If you want to know how delusional leftist judges are, and how no item is beneath their imperial notice, they've issued rulings that prohibit the executive from power washing the Eisenhower building, which is owned by the executive.
And now leftists are actively trying to organize a coup involving the military and Federal agencies.
Edit: Let's also remember that both Nazism and Fascism are movements created by leftist European intellectuals and atheists who hated Christianity. That's why they were virtually identical to the 20th century progressive movement - a point Republicans were making back then:
- Social darwinism and Eugenics - check. Woodrow Wilson was a staunch eugenist and this was when Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, began her programs to raise the national IQ. Wilson screened the KKK propaganda film "Birth of a Nation" at the White House.
- Militaristic - check. Woodrow Wilson was eager to get the US into WW1.
- Nationalistic - check. Open borders was still quarantined in communism in the early 20th century, so progressives were staunch (ethnic) nationalists.
- Authoritarian - check. Woodrow Wilson had widespread socialism through the Espionage and Sedition acts as well as numerous executive orders (he issued over 1800).
- Hated socialism - check. Socialists were the primary target of Wilson's censorship because they opposed WW1. That's how Eugene v. Debs ended out in prison.
Mussolini and the fascists were anti-liberal opportunists. They didn't really care whether illiberalism came dressed up in the clothes of the Left or the right. Mussolini's early socialism focused largely on attacking the liberal wing of the left; then he pitched fascism as a 'third way' against the left *and* the right to become PM; then when he realized he needed the church he promised the priesthood and the religious right that the fascists would use their violence to enforce Christian culture and destroy communism. Trump, similarly, hasn't really demonstrated much ideological consistency beyond belief that he should be in charge--not other politicians or the rule of law--and that his enemies should be punished. He's co-opted the Christian right now despite not being a practicing Christian, and he co-opted Democratic politics earlier in his life to the same end. (Wilson for his part was a slightly less violent proponent of illiberal rule than Mussolini, and a Confederacy-sympathizing imbecile)
And the people ICE agents in Chicago are terrorizing aren't masked at all. There's video to prove it. That’s pretty much all the judges are doing some cases: noting complete contradictions between agent reports and captured footage. That's no grand act of legal sophistry. It's simple observation of state repression. Read the rulings yourself: https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/49/34/daecfb4d4b86971a884bd736a564/ellisopinion.pdf
"On September 26, 2025, video from an agent’s BWC shows a line of agents standing at
least thirty feet away from protesters outside the Broadview facility on Harvard Street. [Axon Body 4 Video 2025-09-26 1137 D01A3411W at 2:00; see also Doc. 172-11 at 8] (“[T]he crowd [ ] was approximately 30-40 feet away.”). Despite this distance, the agents start yelling “move back, move back” to the protesters and then shoot pepper balls and tear gas at them without any apparent justification. [Axon Body 4 Video 2025-09-26 1137 D01A3411W at 2:21–4:19.] While the agent wrote in his use of force report that protesters were “becoming increasingly hostile,” (Doc. 172-11 at 7), the BWC video shows that the protesters were simply standing there when agents first deployed any force. [Axon Body 4 Video 2025-09-26 1137D01A3411W at 2:21–4:19.] Defendants also highlighted an October 3, 2025 video, presumably to show that agents driving the streets faced constant danger from cars ramming them on purpose. [Axon Body 3 Video 2025-10-03 1122 X60A9929K at 0:00–4:45.] But instead of leaving this impression, the video, which almost entirely consists of a view of the back seat of the car and some dialogue about how the agent’s “body cam is on” and he is “still recording,” suggests that the agent drove erratically and brake-checked other motorists in an attempt to force accidents that agents could then use as justifications for deploying force. Id. This also calls into question Hewson’s testimony that motorists have rammed into agents every day during the operation.[8 Doc. 255 at 232:19–22]. On October 4, 2025, in Brighton Park, Defendants directed the Court to BWC footage of an agent pushing a protester to the ground, with tear gas and pepper balls released thereafter. [Axon Body 4 Video 2025-10-04 1541 D01A83204 at 16:00–18:00]. The footage shows the agents allowing the protester they had tackled to the ground to stand up and then tackling him again, kneeling on his head or neck. Id. at 16:14–17:40. Only after agents threw tear gas and pepper balls and pushed the protester to the ground did other protesters throw some bottles of water at the agents, which cannot support the agents’ use of force.

^^^Only a small sampling of the body of evidence underscoring my point above.
"then he pitched fascism as a 'third way' against the left *and* the right to become PM"
That third way *IS* leftism. The far left was communist and the right was classical liberalism. Individual rights to life, liberty, and property. The third way held that we could have a welfare state funded by a progressive income tax. The free markets would be tempered by a giant administrative state. And then we'd have "positive rights" to food and health care. Fascism is just another flavor of leftism.
Biden is a much better analogy to Mussolini than Trump. Start with all the garden variety leftism like expanding the administrative state and the size of the government.
Censorship:
-------------
- Under Biden, the FBI, DoJ, and White House all repeatedly told social media to take down stories and memes by conservatives. This has been confirmed by both Musk and Zuckerberg.
- By contrast, Trump's biggest act of "censorship" is deciding that the AP doesn't have a constitutional right to one of the 49 sites in the WH briefing room.
Weaponized Justice
---------------------
- Under Biden: the FBI, DoJ, and IRS all targeted peaceful conservatives. For example, conservatives who showed up to school board meetings about the indoctrination in the schools (another fascist principle), were labeled as domestic terrorists and subject to investigations. Same thing for peaceful pro-life protestors. But violent antifa protestors were never charged.
- Under Trump: the supremacy clause of the Constitution says that ICE has the right to investigate and deport illegal aliens. But the left - the true insurrectionists - have decided to stop the government from doing its legal powers. There have been assassination attempts and death threats on ICE agents for doing their job of deporting illegal aliens. There are mass violent protests that include assaulting ICE agents and attacks on Federal buildings. The government of these blue cities has ordered the police to stand down, so Federal troops are being sent to blue cities for protection.
- Under Biden: Trump was the subject of clearly BS and weaponized investigations. For example, the President has the right to declassify all classified documents. So they only way a former president could have illegal classified documents is if he forgot to say "by the way, these are declassified" as the U-Haul pulled away from the White House. But the Vice President can only declassify documents that he himself classified. And yet Biden was not charged with anything, but Trump had a SWAT team go through Mar-A-Lago with orders to use lethal force if necessary.
And they rifled through Melania's underwear drawer while they were there, which shows just how creepy leftists are.
***“That third way *IS* leftism. The far left was communist and the right was classical liberalism. Individual rights to life, liberty, and property. The third way held that we could have a welfare state funded by a progressive income tax.”***
No, it was simply anti-liberalism. Your taxonomy is inaccurate in that it leaves out the liberal factions of the left that were among fascism’s key enemies. In Italy itself, liberal socialists like Pietro Nenni or Giovanni Amendola were victimized by Mussolini and the fascists as much as the communists of the illiberal far left, and elsewhere some of fascism’s biggest critics were people like Eduard Bernstein and Keynes. (The latter also a strident critic of Marx and the Communists, if you recall)
Re: censorship, you’re completely leaving out Trump’s attempts to intimidate and subdue the press by marshalling the executive branch’s resources in the courts, via his lawsuits–which if you read the details of, often pretty much solely consist of charges that they printed stuff he didn’t like. And that’s before we get to the targeting of funds for organizations like NPR, done–again–merely because he simply didn’t like that they sometimes criticized him.
The Biden admin communicated to the leadership of social media companies that it believed certain content on their platforms should be taken down because (in their view) it constituted misinformation–maybe an ill-advised thing to do, but it literally never went beyond that, and Trump had done the same thing previously. Equating the two is like saying A.) the government sending a letter to the editor of a newspaper saying ‘We think X is misinfo and should removed from the pages of your paper’, and B.) the government suing a newspaper using federal funds and DOJ lawyers, and threatening to inflict massive financial damages upon it unless it acts exactly as they want…are the same thing. (They aren’t)
And Biden never used state funds to send de facto state terror cells into red cities or towns to harass and terrorize their citizenry, while bragging about it on social media. Only Trump’s fresh ICE recruits can be said to hold that ignominious parallel to the blackshirts. Your claim that it's not about harassing political enemies but about 'immigration enforcement' is undercut by the fact that these large military deployments were never sent into the red-state urban centers with the highest number of illegal immigrants--such as Houston and Dallas Ft. Worth, home to far higher numbers of illegal migrants than Chicago--nor were they sent into the border towns and municipalities where they are most needed to regulate cross-border traffic, and that are far more resource-poor than big cities.
>>> "No, it was simply anti-liberalism. Your taxonomy is inaccurate in that it leaves out the liberal factions of the left that were among fascism’s key enemies."
There is such a thing as left-liberals - liberals who believe in Enlightenment values like civic patriotism. The creators of this substack are among the modern left-liberals. If you are opposed to Wokism then you too may be a left-liberal. But you, Minsky, are not a left-liberal and your movement is not left-liberalism. Your movement is leftist. There is no intellectual lineage between the people who opposed fascism and you.
>>> "you’re completely leaving out Trump’s attempts to intimidate and subdue the press by marshalling the executive branch’s resources in the courts, via his lawsuits"
Guess what: You can't lie to defame someone and then claim to be protected by the fist amendment. The BBC recently admitted that they spliced together Trump's speech on January 6 - the one we've all heard about going to the capital to fight. The press has been pushing the "very fine people" lie for almost ten years now.
>>> "Only Trump’s fresh ICE recruits can be said to hold that ignominious parallel to the blackshirts."
No, ICE is legally justified in deporting illegal aliens in blue cities. That's what the Supremacy clause of the Constitution means. The fact that the left is trying to stop them with violent protests means that the left is fundamentally committing insurrection at this point, much like the South did in the 1950s.
>>>But you, Minsky, are not a left-liberal and your movement is not left-liberalism. Your movement is leftist.<<<
I don't really have a 'movement'--I've said if I had to pick which political school of thought I fit into, it would be liberal nationalism, but I have disagreements with some of the views of major liberal nationalist figures, too. (Ironically it is the black liberal nationalists I find come closest in terms of political philosophy--people like Alain Locke and MLK, Jr.--and the Post-Keynesians who talk the most sense economically) I think the real struggle right now is between liberal and illiberal politics, and to that extent I see militant woke-ists and Trump as essentially two sides of the same coin, just as Stalin's communism and Mussolini's fascism were really much more the same than they were different.
>>>Guess what: You can't lie to defame someone and then claim to be protected by the first amendment.<<<
I never said one could. But Trump's lawsuits haven't been about that in any credible way. Have you looked at the CBS lawsuit? How is having the government and the DOJ sue and intimidate a news corporation for editing an interview with the sitting president's former political rival in a way he dislikes (but cannot be remotely described as creating false statements) *not* an attempt to subdue the first amendment and a free press?
>>>No, ICE is legally justified in deporting illegal aliens in blue cities.<<<
They are indeed justified in performing such an action, but they are not justified in engaging in state repression and state terror, and the video feeds of their Chicago operations that they have had to submit in court have shown that that is largely what they have been doing. (Again, the courtroom evidence is where you can see the reality of what's going on, here's the source again if you doubt it: https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/49/34/daecfb4d4b86971a884bd736a564/ellisopinion.pdf) Were the blackshirts that worked as civil police under fascism justified in protecting people from violence perpetrated by communist revolutionaries? Yes. Was that what they were primarily being used for by the fascist regime? No. The things they *were* being used for--state repression of its own citizens--and the individuals dedicated to such activities is the parallel I'm talking about.
Looking forward to your commentary of the six democrats who just turned up the heat in their party’s anti-Trump strategy. They stated the obvious that it is required of a service member to refuse an illegal order, without mentioning what they were talking about. Abugrave prision scandal comes to mind as a clear example where abusing prisoners took place. With Congresses’s 15% approval ratings, it will be interesting if the rest of the democrats support whatever it is the six are referring to.
The left thinks 2,000 unarmed yahoos protesting the election certification vote (remember the doctored video footage) is insurrection. Meanwhile they’re assassinating ICE agents, storming federal offices, and deciding that their authority trumps the Supreme Court.
They were encouraging insubordination and insurrection. There are over 2 million active service members - are they all constitutional scholars? Are they all supposed to pick and choose which orders to follow?

Here is the gist of it:
“The result is a paradox that defines much of blue state America. Government that promises more costs more, but delivers less.”
Just a quick reminder that you ought not, in future commentaries, be tempted to sanewash the fact that the U.S. military is occupying American cities inhabited by Trump’s political opponents and carrying out state-led terrorism against them—it is now a confirmed fact, not a matter of opinion, or an ‘exaggeration’, as so many have suggested here: https://chicago.suntimes.com/immigration/2025/11/20/unusual-and-possibly-unprecedented-judge-calls-out-chicago-feds-as-midway-blitz-cases-fall-apart
