I often read economists trying to tell me how great things are based on GDP, wages, soy exports, etc, what they all seem to miss is that all that crap has nothing to do with how most of us live our lives.

Governments are supposed to keep us safe, enforce the law, and take care of all those things that businesses aren't real good at doing, and around the world, governments are on vacation or something.

In the US there is this feeling like the whole thing isn't working out for most people, and there's nothing we can do about it because whoever we elect is just corrupted by the system anyway.

We have no party for the bottom four income quintiles.

Interesting observations. Just remember that all politics is local. Factors in one country do not always transfer or apply to others. The only "constant" has been the rise of anti-elite populism in countries smothered by bureaucracies and administrators, including the United States. In that sense, Canada is a huge exception.

Agree. Not sure why the Canuckleheads are so compliant with whatever BS is dumped on them, but whatever, eh?

Low approval rates makes perfect sense in highly polarized eras.

- Every candidate starts with about 40% disapproval from the other party.

- Independents hold their nose and vote for the candidate they dislike the least, but unless the economy is supercharged and the news is relatively free of drama, they're going to dislike the candidate they reluctantly voted for.

But we won't always be polarized. One party will the youth, and the other will be repudiated by short-term history.

- If the Republicans lose then the nation will follow the downward spiral of California, but give the Democrats a permanent majority in the process. Native-born, working-class whites, blacks and legal immigrants will be pushed permanently into low-wage slums as steady immigration arbitrages the culture of the US and the culture of Latin America.

-If the Democrats lose, then it will be yet another failed leftist movement to add to the history books.

It would be interesting to cross check the popularity of leaders (a figure only available for some countries) with the Index of Economic Freedom. “High levels of economic freedom within a country correlate to greater wealth per person, less poverty, greater human development, and healthier environments and societies.”

Economic freedom may have something to do with the popularity of leaders in states as well. What is determined to be the freest state in the US? It isn’t number 4 ranked Texas or number 6 ranked Florida.
